Rugby World Cup lessons we learnt from the weekend

It was an action packed weekend of rugby with many top sides putting in more final preparations for the Rugby World Cup. Two tournament hopefuls, Wales and Ireland went topped the list and we saw all the Island sides in action. Fiji, Tonga and Samoa all having runs. France and Scotland showed how dominant they can be against weaker opposition and we took a little look at some of the smaller sides as well. Is everything in England’s World Cup garden rosy?

I am sure Eddie has a plan and I am sure it is a cunning one, but I don’t know it and I am a little worried. Why, you might ask? England have just come off an all power performance in beating Ireland 57-15 and showed Wales a clean pair of heels in the first half of their match at Twickenham that was enough to win the game. Admittedly they then lost to the same opposition in Cardiff in a rudderless performance with mixture of a team containing starters and finishers (I hate that term) and any way these are warm up matches. My seven good reasons were not enough to save Liam Squire’s omission, but that’s not the big bombshell selection from the All Blacks Rugby World Cup squad named today. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has once again shown he has no issues promoting youth and inexperience, as he leaves a double World Cup winning prop at home and takes a one cap bench cameo flanker to Japan. Cheika, not afraid to take a risk, has named an uncapped rookie who has spent most of the season out with injury, along with an evergreen 35 year old veteran!
